D300 Samples

New D300 shots (also some D3 samples) can be found here.

I’ve put one of the shots 1600iso sample shots here:

Based on the full-sized image, if you were expecting the D300 to have similar low-noise characteristics as the D3, you’re going to be disappointed, imo.

At 1600, it looks like it could definitely use from dark-frame elimination. The EXIF data says that it was shot with noise-reduction turned off, so maybe I’ll give it a little latitude.

I think a lot of people (especially on the DPReview forums) were expecting the D300 to be just as good as the D3 with regards to noise characteristics, or rather, lack of noise. I believe this is unrealistic, mainly because of the smaller size DX sensor.
However, I’m quite happy with the samples I’ve seen, like this one – I currently get more noise than this at half the ISO setting with my D70s.
But then again, I don’t profess to be an expert photographer (yet!)
Roll on November! (Incidentally, it’s my birthday on the 1st, too early for a present from Nikon, sniff!)

I’m not happy with the black background, it’s a field of noise, but I wonder how my D2x would handle it… I essentially never shoot over 800 and don’t like to go above 400…

To me it looks VERY choppy. I’m nervous (even though I’ve ordered my D300!).

There are some slightly better (though lower ISO) shots at http://nikond300.dpnotes.com/nikon-d300-high-iso-sample-images-from-an-expo-in-paris/ that I found the other day (copy that link).

PS I have done some Nikon lens comparison tests. They are at http://www.wedphotos.co.uk/nikon.htm
