Nikon APS-C sized Sensor in a Point and Shoot?
Remember the Nikon digital rangefinder idea?
Well there’re some more rumors swirling that Nikon’s going to make a fixed-lens point and shoot with an ASP-C sized sensor and I’d be second in line to buy it. We have a lot of concert venues in my area where some will allow cameras but their rule is no removable lenses (which keeps my D2x) out but would let in a P&S, so I’m cheering this on.
Also, I have no desire to take snap-shots with my d2x at random social events since it’s big and heavy and valuable, which is not a great combo when you’ve got a few pints.
So a poster on dpReview says:
If Sigma dont get the DP1 on the market soon there will be, because Nikon is quickly developing their own large sensor DP1 equivalent camera.
When people later call BS, he writes:
I cant substantiate it, but its no rumor…Lets just say I have a little bird within Nikon UK.
But he needn’t have a birdie, it’s pretty clear that there’s a market need for a DECENT F’ING point and shoot. The PowerShot Gx series (g3, g5, g9, etc) is the closest that I’ve personally seen to what I’m looking for, but I need a larger sensor for less noise at 400+.
Wouldn’t it be absolutely staggering to get a D2x’s sensor into an S700’s body?!

Hi Matt,
I follow your blog in a daily basis. Great job.
This camera exists since 2005 and it’s called Sony DSC-R1. It uses a variation of the D2x APS-C sensor, fixed 24-120 Carl Zeiss ultra wide exceptional lens.
(by the way, I own a D2x and a R1 camera)

Hope this helps.
