New Nikkor AF-S 16-85 f3.5-5.6 ED VR
[Update 2:] Pictures were taken from this forum.
[Update! Pictures!] I’m betting this is a PMA lens, too bad we don’t have leaks on professional PRIMES! Who’s got them? Mail me!

I was going to put this in the unpossible category since there’s the nice 28-70mm that everyone who’s cool just bought, but realized that, being a variable aperture lens, this might not at all be a bad idea.Sell it for $800 or so, market the IQ as better than the 18-200mm for more “serious amateurs”…

I doubt $800. I think most people see this as Nikon’s answer to Canon’s 17-85 IS. It will make a great kit lens option, probably replacing the 18-70mm.
I am still of two minds about whether this is real.
One one hand, it was totally unexpected and it’s very difficult to believe Nikon would let an unannounced lens slip this far out into the public view. Some might argue it’s a clever marketing move, but I don’t think so. The 18-55VR just started shipping. This news will most likely stop sales of that lens dead.
On the other hand, a 16-85VR makes sense, especially against the Canon model. Maybe some crazy Nikon product tester went insane and prematurely revealed a lens that was supposed to be announced with the D90.
If it is a photoshopped 18-200VR, someone went to an awful lot of expense to intricately doctor several photos from various angles.
So a tentative hats off to Nikon, but if it cost $800, I would tell them where they can stick it.
