New Nikon D3x for the Studio? 18mp? May/June?
I have just spoken to one of my suppliers in the uk who is beta testing(whatever that means) the new D3″studio” body this week.
It is apparently due out this may/june and will feature 18million pixels. Which due to nikons better lens glass will, i hope , match the canon .
This is entirely unsurprising. I haven’t written up my predictions for the coming year, but I fully expect that there is going to be a sensor that splits the difference between 12 and 24ish mp in the fx size.
The reason it’ll split the difference is to get a high dynamic range than simply doubling the DX-sized sensor area.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the sensor copies Fuji sensors and has more than 1 size of sensor well on the chip– some of the sensor sites will be DX-sized (small) and some will be FX-sized (larger).
I’d be pretty damned surprised if we see it this year though.
Nikon seems to love the horrible marketing strategy of keeping us in the dark, telling us that whatever they have to sell is all there is and there’ll never be anything else, then bring out something new just after we’ve spent all of our cash.
So I’m guessing we see it in 1.5 to 2 years, just after everyone’s already bought a D3 or D300.
