Adorama: Want Your D3? Pay for an extended Warranty or You Ain’t Getting It! Maybe?
[Update]
Wow!!! This is absolutely not true!! We don’t upsell for one, and we ship the cameras out in the order they were purchased!! Please email me your order number and the phone number, so I can listen listen to the recording.

Wow- I can’t believe we’re seeing shit like this, it’s really difficult to understand why a company wants their reputation wrecked.
Now, I can’t verify the veracity of this report (there’s only been 1 report so far… I’ll have to see if more pop up), but I CAN tell you that the CaptureNX I ordered from them had been opened before I received it and that means that I won’t be dealing with them ever again.
Also- given posts from people like this where Adorama takes your pre-order for delivery in a couple weeks, then tells you that the supplier “let them down” means that something too shady is happening.
Here’s the post:
Unbelievable! I’ve been on the wait list since 9/18 and finally got a call from Adorama saying they have 4 D3’s left, but they can only release it if I agree to pay $5500 for two year Adorama warranty! #@#$N!
Why is Adorama resorting to the tactics used by other less reputable vendors? Many bottom-feeder vendors will call back under the pretext of “confirming” your order. They then try to up sell you with add-on/profit-padding kits, warranties, no-name lenses, etc and if you decline, they’ll say your order is on backorder and nothing will ever go out.
I only order from Adorama and B&H precisely because they don’t play games like these. My jaw dropped when I got the call from them today telling me they paid “a lot more for these few D3’s” [ed: This is PURE UNBELIEVABLE BULLSHIT] and to “recover their costs” they have to sell it with the 2 year Adorama warranty for $5500. I was told they got 167 D3’s in last week, but many went to employees and other internal sales. This is why I’m not getting mine, but I’m currently on the top 20 and should get one off the next shipment. I guess there is no integrity to their wait list.
I think I’m going to scratch this vendor off my list. I’ve been recommending and ordering from them for over 15 years and I guess business is so hard and they must do what they must do to get a buck. I just hate the tactics they’re using. In all fairness, I’m not sure if this is just the action of one rep or if it’s their new corporate direction.
Anyone else got calls from them to up sell?
This is why I only deal with BHPhotoVideo unless I can’t. They don’t play games like this.

Yes it seems Adorama is falling into the realm of the “shady” dealers. I too had a bad experience when it came to the D3. I preordered mine and was lied to once or twice on ship dates. I was then hard sold a warranty which they charged me for immediately and shipped but the camera was nowhere in sight. I landed up cancelling my order and buying mine direct from Nikon through the military exchange and got 10% off. Will I never shop with Adorama again? No, I probably will, they are still a reputable vendor but I will probably always check B&H first. I think they saw a opportunity to make a few easy bucks and jumped on it. You have to remember, the mark up on bodies is almost nothing and this is the hottest item out there. Most pros probably have all the lenses and CF cards they need already so this is the only way to make a genuine profit on it. I am sure they will calm down a bit once the demand slows down. If anyone is in the U.S. military and wants to buy this camera, go to the exchange web site and enter item number K116P (it wont show up any other way). You can direct order it. I got mine in under two weeks direct from Nikon in the middle of the hype. AAFES has had a few coupons floating around which work on this item as well. They have the D300 available for immediate ship as well, I dont remember the item number but it is k116something. You can also direct order the 14-24 and 24-70 lenses.

I got my D3 from Adorama in about 10 days and they didn’t call about the MAC extended warranty until another 2 weeks after. I’ve bought lenses, filters, strobes and even used equipment and they’ve always been straight forward with me. OK! They did mess up an order once but I decided to keep the item (inexpensive) and ordered the “correct” item from a competitor. I actually had more trouble with my credit card company due to the cost of the D3… and I was no where near my limit limit. And yes, call me foolish if it makes you feel better. I got the extended warranty.
