CaptureNX V2 Close to Release?

I get so tied up in wanting new lenses and listening to talk of new bodies (where’s my damned digital rangefinder or Nikon DP-1/like body?) that I forget about software woes.

Here’s a thread on dpReview discussing the likely soon arrival of a newer version:

talking with a Nikon tech this morning (I was complaining that the dust-off feature in NX doesn´t work with the D3) I was told that no more updates of NX 1 were expected as the NX 2 is about to see the light. I asked if it was a matter of “months” and the answer was “no, much less than months”.

Also, we’re seeing some price cuts to clear the channel of inventory:

In the Netherlands the price of Capture NX has dropped significantly last week…

Might be an indicator. Over here Capture NX used to cost 139 Eur, but now it sells for

89 Euro here:

or 69 Euro here:

Capture is … frustrating? Way better than nothing, I guess. I say, “I guess” because half the time I go to apply a change to my image, then apply another change, it wipes out the first change and I have to do it again.

I admit that I’m probably still not skilled enough with it, but that still doesn’t change things like how it steadfastly refuses to be a Windows application- the windows are non-standard and don’t behave normally, the menus don’t function the way Windows apps are supposed to implement their menus (Alt-f doesn’t open the File menu, for example), they have a funky way to expand and contract, etc, and on a 20″ LCD (at 1600×1200) which is way higher res than a lot of people use, it’s STILL too little real-estate to have a directory view of my images and do some minor editing.

Also- does anyone really use the control-point technology? I get the images into a workable shape and then into Photoshop from there.

Let’s hope the new one is better.

I use the control point feature often and find that it works quite well. It has its limitations, of course, but given that I’m already using Capture NX for its fantastic colour rendering, it’s not inconvenient.

I agree that the UI is horrendous. Batch processing is incredibly painful as well.

I must agree with wings. I’ve actually switched from using Photoshop primarily (after 10 years) to using Capture NX becuase of the U-Point technology.

The UI sucks and I hate that you can’t move steps around, but hopefully that will improve. I’d love to see it be able to understand other programs ratings as well cause I can’t get View NX to work worth a darn on my machine…

Great site btw – just stumbled onto it and am glad I did…great work.

I think a lot of people (myself included) use it primarily for it’s rendering of NEFs, which is better/different to other software, and it’s U-point technology. That alone saves me a lot of time instead of having to use use masks when it’s not necessary.

Now that Lightroom 2 will incorporate a similar feature, I may stop using it altogether, though.

Oh, and it’s slow as heck too.

  5. mjames Says:

I agree…it’s way too slow. That should be a major fix in v2. I actually can’t see a huge difference in speed between my new iMac and my old powerbook G4…that’s right – powerbook, not mac book pro.
