D700 – So is it fake?

I don’t know. Could well be. In the comments, there’re some interesting arguments against it, but if it is, it’s sure a clever way to fake it! I think we’ll be seeing this technique more frequently. What we haven’t heard much about though is whether or not the Chinese forums tend to have people who’re willing to fake things like this, or if this is a phenomenon
largely relegated to an attention-seeking kid in Santa Barbara. The last date mentioned was July 1st. I expect to see some more fakes before then, and if there are any that aren’t clear fakes, I’ll let you know. I won’t be reporting on clear fakes, there’s just no reason to.

I tend to think that this one may be real. At least I hope it is.
I haven’t seen any compelling arguments disproving the rumor. If you look close, the sync cap is not the same as either the D200 or D300 — it is something new.
Also, in one of the photos the pentaprism housing looks small, but I think that is for two reasons. First, in the actual product photo, the camera seems to be tilted back a bit. Compare the area around the shutter release to the same type of shots of a D300 or D3. It is much more compressed, as if the photo of the D700 was taken from a low angle. This would make the housing look smaller. Second, the cameraphone photo was taken from an angle. In some forum, someone stretched the photo in order to make the lens a circle and the housing became much larger.
Anyway, thanks for showing some moderation on your blog. Much better than “that other site” that regurgitates every piece of garbage that shows up on DPReview.
