Yup- D700 Ships With LCD Protector
Thanks to everyone for writing into tell me that it comes with the LCD protector- it appears that the D700’s LCD is based on (or is…) the D300’s LCD.

This is not correct and very simple to explain.
The D700 and D3 LCDs are exactly the same, as can be checked in Nikon site under the tech specs.
What is different is the built-in transparent protection of the LCD.
In the D3 it is tempered glass, while in the D700 is the hard plastic found on every other Nikon DSLR.

I’m pretty sure that someone from Nikon said on d1scussion that the D300 doesn’t need a LCD protector either, they just included it cos people asked why there wasn’t one if they didn’t.
I’ve certainly be using mine without a protector since day 1, and it’s free of scratches.

Actually it’s definitely tempered glass and not plastic. Here’s the poop directly from Nikon’s website:
High-definition, 3-inch VGA, TFT LCD monitor with wide viewing angle
The ultrahigh-definition [920,000-dot VGA (640 x 480)], 3-inch LCD monitor with tempered glass provides a 170° viewing angle. The large monitor is remarkably effective when confirming the focus with enlarged playback images. The wide viewing angle enables easy recomposing of the frame in Hand-held mode with Live View.
