D90 Movies Look Like Jello! Oh No!
Nikon D90 movies are getting out and we’re starting to see how they handle real-world situations, and I don’t mean during earthquakes! But viewing the footage below, you’d think that house was made out of jello and St. Andreas was happy that day.
If you have a D90, I’m guessing that you’re going to want to use a tripod and I’m also very curious as to how quickly moving subjects are going to show up.
If this “jello” effect is common, then movie mode isn’t going to be too useful.
I’ve read that Canon has similar problems, I’ll try and get some examples for you.

This is a result of using a electronic rolling shutter rather than a mechanical one. The photosites are scanned sequentially, and movement of the camera causes the next row scanned to be slightly misallined.
Certainly Canon will have a similar one, however, from clips I’ve seen, it appears a little less noticible. Canon has a lot of experience making video cameras, so they may have a slight advantage here.
As long as you learn to use the camera within its limitations, there should be no problem. If you want to wave your camera back and forth, no one would want to see your video in any event.

That’s not good! I’ll stick to a regular video camera, thank you.

Or maybe a stablised lens…

This should change with shutter speed. Is the D90’s video mode fixed to a shutter speed? A faster one should have less wiggle.

Could this be caused or accentuated by the use of stabilised (VR) lens?

canon’s hv20 does that too. and it’s a camcorder
but here’s real usage of d90. looks great.
