Sigma Acquires Foveon
Well this is mildly interesting. Foveon deserves our sympathy- she was so pretty and full of potential nearly a decade ago, but she started to hang out with bad company- Sigma, maker of the kind of lenses you should use to prop a door open or use to send ants to a fiery hell.
Now she’s marrying Sigma… I feel sorry for Foveon- she had great promise. I guess I knew it was all going nowhere when Sigma was the first camera maker to implement Foveon’s sensor. If it was so great, surely Nikon or Canon would have used it.

What in your opinion is wrong with Sigma lenses? I use some and was always happy with the price / benefit ratio or how you call it…
What would you recommend as an alternative, besides Nikon, which i would buy if they wouldn’t be that expensive…
Just interested in other opinions…

Sometimes large companies are prone to NIH (Not invented Here). They tend to be arrogant and come up with lots of reasons to ignore promising technology. Then one day, they are on the outside looking in.
Kodak invented digital image sensors, but the internal experts convinced management thet they would never replace film.
I worked for a large high technology company, and I saw it all the time. The “experts” just can’t believe that anyone else but them could invent something good.

Bah. Sigma has made some great lenses as well as some junk– Nikon has made some junk too. I wish Nikon paid as much attention to the prime market as Sigma currently does.
As far as Foveon, I think the technology was overhyped from the beginning. Hopefully, Sigma’s camera division won’t sink the whole company.
